Him And Her

- Edward Hamilton

Why did we stop here? She would wonder. Why did the officers let us pass unquestioned? Who was involved in this accident? A hundred and one questions flashed in her mind as she walked at the other end of the car. As she proceeded she looked at her side looking for her soul mate who stood there a few seconds ago. She couldn’t see him and still couldnt hear the sound of the sirens. She walks in front of the crushed car to see whether he was there. She can hear him call out her name but still couldn’t see him. She brushes off her hair from in front of her face and follows what seemed to be a trail of blood on the ground that led towards the back of the tree. He would call her and she would call back. She walked to the tree and at that moment everything around her seemed to have just vanished. The cars, the lights, the road. She would stare at the ground looking at the trail and she followed it to the other side of the tree. Her head felt heavy and she felt feint and extremely uncomfortable. She could feel something was wrong but was not clear enough to pin point. She remembers what her lover used to do when he needed to concentrate and did the same. She would close her eyes and would take a deep breath and would let her senses take over, just like he would do and she slowly begins to listen to the trickling rain. The sirens were beginning to be heard, yet the sound of the rain was louder. She would smell the fuel in the air and she would open up her eyes as she would take one slow step at a time. She would still be able to hear the sound of his voice. It would echo in her head. She could also listen to the conversation between the two officers who had their hands full with a hysteric driver who might have been involved in the accident. The two officers seemed to be trying to calm the driver down but with minimal success. The driver was screaming in shock.

Amongst the bits of glass and branches and leaves that fell off the tree on impact, she noticed and stared at an odd shape in the foliage between the huge tree and the wrecked car. The wind was picking up fast and the rain poured down slightly heavier. She felt so confused and disturbed. She walks towards the heap of leaves. Her jaw dropped. Her face lost all its color and she began to shiver. She stood there in horror for a second until she realizes that what lay there seemed to be the body of a young man. She looks at the car and looks at the passenger side of the car and pieces up together what might have happened. She looks at the skid marks left on the ground and seemed that the car had lost control due to the slippery road and rammed into the tree on the passenger side. She is even more confused when she recognizes the car involved in the accident. It belonged to her. Her personal belongings were scattered around the area and her memories began rising to the surface. She begins to feel a sharp pain at the back of her head and her legs feel weak too. She kneels down resting on the tree trying to figure out what happened and were did her partner go. She cries miserably and pounds the puddle filled ground as she screams his name out as loud as she possibly can. She is overwhelmed with the same awful feeling of before so decides to walk on the side of the road were she finally collapses.

She opens her eyes only to find the two officers she had seen before leaning over her. They were talking to her but she could not identify what they were trying to say. Her body ached with pain and she finds it hard to move. What appeared to be a nurse held her up and gave her assistance. She can’t remember much and all her concerns regard the whereabouts of her lover. There was one of the three men who stood her up and asked if she was all right. She muttered she was fine but was concerned about her man. He shook his head as he closed his eyes and looked down. She questioned the man rudely and demanded an explanation. He wouldn’t reply. She cried and screamed in agony until he forced her towards the ambulance. Before she got in she asked what had happened. The nurse began. He explains that they both were involved in an accident as the car had lost control on the slippery road and crashed into the tree. The car was completely damaged beyond repair on the passenger side yet the drivers’ side was intact. What, were and how she would ask. “Where is he!” she would scream. He explains that she was the only survivor. She takes a moment in disbelief as she tries to make sense of it all. The noise around her had become deafening and she felt flushed. She walks over to the body by the tree together with the nurse, plucking up all her courage one last time. She looked up in the night sky and remembers a couple of phrases he said to her earlier on. “I have to go, it will be fine” and she wondered why he would ask her if she was ready. She breaks down onto the nurse that was holding her and asks what happened once again. He explained to her. “The woman in the car behind us is being questioned as we speak but it is almost certain that she lost control due to the wet road and drove into the back of your car as you were parked on the side of the road”. As he looked down to the ground he continued “In turn, your vehicle was shoved forward and rammed into the tree and we found you strapped within the car unconscious”.

“What about Ed?” she asked.

With a short nudge of his head he points towards the direction of the tree. She moved closer only to discover that the body that lay there motionless between the car and the tree under the pouring rain belonged to her one true love. Her soul mate lay there with the sunflower still tightly clenched in his hand. Lifeless.

She leaned down and placed the sunflower beside them as she gently placed his hand in hers. She refuses to accept and breaks into a moan that could be heard for miles. The nurse does everything in his power to comfort her as he tried to help her up, but she refused.

As she broke down into tears she collapsed on the ground and lost consciousness.
