Him And Her

- Edward Hamilton

A few minutes later he asks her to pull over yet again on the side of the road. Her memory was quite faint as regards that part of the road but she definitely remembers one occasion, driving back home, he had spotted a lonely sunflower sprouting out the ground amongst a couple of wild shrubs under a huge tree at the side of the road. She remembers he had stopped the car and picked it for her. She loves the fact that he is so spontaneous and loves the fact that he gives attention to the little things in life that make her so happy. He pops out of the vehicle to collect the beautiful flower. She listens to the music as she looks at every gesture and movement of her lover who struggles to remove the flower from its roots. This scene looked familiar to her. She looks around at the wet road and the neighboring buildings but can’t recall ever being there with him. As he steps into the wet soil he reminisces about the moment that had taken place on the top of the cliff. He wonders if she is ready for what he had to say to her.

She takes a deep breath as she sinks into the car seat and closes her eyes as she thanks the Lord above for the joy she has just received. She looks forward to waking up every morning with a kiss from the man in front of her. She can’t wait for him to get back in the car. She wanted to drift off even more but her concentration was shattered by the loud sound of a siren of some sort. She thought it would be a police car at that time of the night so peeked through her rear view mirror and noticed an ambulance speeding right past her heading straight down the road they were on. She gave little importance to it as he walked towards the car with the flower in one hand.

“Do you remember the night we stopped here?” he asked whilst handling the flower to her.

She tries to picture the last time she was there but it was all a blur. She remembered nothing else apart from stopping there for some reason or another. She gets frustrated to the fact she couldn’t remember anything about that night, especially when he seems to remember every little detail of it. The road was empty with not a sound, apart from the gentle drizzle of the rain and the siren in the distance further down the road. She invites him to come back in, yet he remains looking at her with out ever blinking his eyes. He crosses his arms and leans in through the window and asks “are you ready love?” She acknowledges and urges him to come in as she rolled up the car window to prevent rain from getting in. They hug and she feels him distant. “Do you have something on your mind?” she would inquire. He would look at her and pause and a tear would run down his face as he leaned in and said “I think its time to go”.

She didn’t question him any longer and just placed her hand on his thigh and hoped that all was fine. She asked him to hold her hand and he complied. She felt that his hand was not as warm as it used to. His hand was freezing yet his face seemed fine. She thought that his hands might be cold since he was out in the rain a few moments ago. She would look at him and he seemed pensive so she decided to drive around for a while. She would notice that his clothes were dry although he had been in the rain for quite some time. As she was about to bring this to his attention, a police car overtook them and she focused her attention in its direction. He asked her very calmly to follow the car and that led them back to where he had picked the sunflower earlier. She recognized the tall tree yet this time the area wasn’t as peaceful. Without saying a word he indicated ahead with his finger towards five or six bright lights. He didn’t say anything but somehow she knew he wanted her to stop the car. She looked ahead and saw a couple of cars that had been in an accident.

“Is everything all right” she would enquire.

“It will be” he replied. “There was an accident” he continued. She doesn’t understand him or why his energy had dropped so much. As she drives closer to the lights she is overwhelmed by a horrid sensation. She wants to burst into tears once again. She feels angry and powerless and she wants to get out yet he manages to calm her down. She notices a couple of people in uniform next to the two cars she saw storm by earlier. “I need to get out” she said “I feel weak”.

“You really need to see this” he said. She would look at him and she would fail to understand him. She felt eerie and felt her lover had something on his mind and wouldn’t tell her. Somewhat of a strange feeling she never experienced before. His aura was brighter than ever and he inspired peace. He looks at her and smiles gently and dreadfully says “We have to go now”.

“What?” she would ask.

“Please understand that I can not be here with you for much longer” he would say.

She would burst into tears and would try to understand. “Don’t do this again to me” she wept “I’m not ready for this”.

“You are ready now” he said.

She felt angry and sad and refused to believe the words that came out of his mouth.

He looked calm and smiled innocently. She looked ahead at the incredible mess. There was a wreckage of some sort. She turns off the light and he calmly says “follow me, trust me love”.

She would close her eyes and stop herself from crying. They both walk out of the car and look at the awful site in front of them. She felt quite weird as she noticed that she couldn’t hear the sirens of the ambulance nor the police car a few steps away from them. The two officers seemed untroubled by the young couple approaching the wreckages. They paid no attention to them.

She thought about the moment in the car earlier on and asked “why did you say we had to go?”

“Come with me” he replied. As he held her hand, they slowly moved towards the two cars involved in the accident, one of which was lying on its side resting on a tree at the side of the road were they stopped earlier. She felt awful but just having his energy there lifted her moral slightly so she kept on. The rain was still coming down and she was drenched yet she failed to understand why his clothes were still dry. He approaches the car and asks her to look on the other side of it. The car was totally smashed on the passenger side and the glass had shattered and left a trail across the road. The top and front of the car were badly damaged and the smell of fuel filled the air. She paces herself, walking through the pieces of metal and glass that lay on the floor.
