Somadeva (contd.)
sage Photo Caption

He had placed his curiosities before him almost similar to what he placed before Gautam. But here also he could not get the replies to his satisfaction. Consequently he got further confused but remained curious to find out the cause of such contradictions or perplexities.

The period through which Somadeva passed his early years had been a time of significant political upheavals too. Kings and tribal chieftains had been fighting among themselves; some for the expansion of their territories and others were compelled to defend themselves. Polarization of power had started to happen as a necessity for survival. Weak wanted defense security from the powerful and latter wanted to further enhance their power and income.

The Kosala, Magadha, Vatsa and Avanti had emerged as powerful kingdoms. Lately the king of Kosala had become ineffective having been preoccupied too much in religious rituals and perusing mysticism. His time and wealth was being spent heavily on religious activities and on so-called holy-men, Brahmins, saints, ascetics, etc.  Due to its weak ruler, the kingdom was infested by all sorts of crimes - looting, arson, and murders. The people of Kosala had been leading an insecure and disorganized life. The kingdom was losing its importance and commerce, and the State had become a liability on the population by spending much more than revenue earned.

Somadeva's own town Mithila had lost its importance, too. The erstwhile kingdom of Janak, the great king of Videha, had almost disappeared into insignificance and Lichhavees had since established a new kingdom of Magadah.  Magadh had become the most powerful and prosperous kingdom. But Lichhavees had an over powering ambition for expanding the boundaries of the kingdom.  Such an ambition had caused incessant wars and bloodshed causing tremendous hardships to the common citizens. Trade and business had suffered severely in the conquered states causing heavy loss of lives and severe financial hardships. Consequently a general appeal for peace and amnesty had been raised by all, losers and winners in the battles. The public was suffering from religious and cultural unrest; lines between various Varnas were getting diminished due to financial hardships.

It was the natural consequence that the children born and brought up in such an aggressive environment were usually either pessimists or revolutionists. Somadeva had lost faith in all religions and cultures. Varnas System based on birth  and orthodox ways of God worshipping had become  nauseous to  him. However notwithstanding such an environment he  had  not lost his basic constitution or character. By the time he became a grown up man, he was firmly settled in his thoughts and was behaviorally quite matured. At this juncture his life took a romantic turn.
