Somadeva (contd.)

Times had changed subsequently, and along with it the social order had also changed the whole pattern of society. In these changed circumstances the Vratyas had to change. They found survival difficult in the changed social order with changed human values. They had to compromise and decided to settle down some where, at a place where there could be social security and enough commerce to carry on surviving. Finally they, rather most of them, settled in the foothills of Himalayas.

Most of the nomads, including Acharya’s family, had taken up trading in cattle and handicrafts, since the art of martial training had taken a back seat with growing thrust on commerce and agriculture. Now agriculture and trading in food grains had become the main stay of the mass economy. More over the martial skills, which were imparted by this clan, had become obsolete; more sophistication had come in this art of combat. More efficient weaponry had been added to battling and fighting.

When Somadeva, now Acharya, was born the society was undergoing cultural transformation. This significant phase of social and religious metamorphosis was visible all over the world. New faiths and religions were in the offing to suit the social and economic requirements of the day.

The knowledge until late was passed down by word-of-mouth and its true meaning usually got lost or got distorted with passage of time. This phenomenon was conceivable when knowledge passed on in this fashion from one generation to another. Some imaginative persons even expanded the real text to make it more fascinating adding their own viewpoints at the cost of precision. In this process various forms of philosophical discipline sprung up in social and religious horizon.

Agriculture and barter system brought prosperity and wealth to certain class of people in the society while its large section felt exploited. Former class had enough spare time and resources to slide into the life of luxury, extravagance and indulgence. This sort of living promoted dancers and courtesans extensively. Family life of many got ruined and ultimately finished. A time came when rich class males avoided marrying and got tied down to social evils.  Too much indulgence in wine and woman generated a natural hatred towards luxuries. Even the rich and resourceful people felt queasiness in their advanced age.

The widespread extravagance and luxuries compelled a major chunk of society to find new avenues of spiritual solace, mental peace and relief from social tensions. The people, by-and-large, were fed up of sinful life style and transitory ways of happiness. They were searching for other faiths and religious order to sooth their wounded soul. Buddhism and Jainism were being critically examined with a view to find something for salvation. Totally frustrated persons took extreme step to follow the path of asceticism.  Since asceticism did not involve great rituals and preparations, it was being professed with great emphasis as powerful means of salvation from human sufferings.
