Beggar King

- Dr. Yogesh Chandra

The other day a famous king who used to give alms to every needy person went on a hunting spree. That day he could not find a good prey. The night fell and the person accompanying the king departed away one by one except only one body guard. At night fall the king felt tiresome, hungry and thirsty. He came across a hut where a lamp was burning and he thought of getting some rest and shelter for the night. He stayed the night in that hut. In the morning the king bade good bye to the poor. And gave him a memento and assured him that whenever he needed anything he may come to him.

One day the poor fellow wanted some help from the king. He went to the palace. He was accorded a warm welcome and was put in the guest house. In the morning when he wanted to return he was requested to wait for some time. He was astonished to see the king on a prayer mat sitting on the floor with folded knees, eyes closed and both hands raised. The poor fellow asked what was the king doing. Prompt came the reply, the king was begging from God for happiness, wealth, and peace for his subject. Immediately the poor fellow came out off the palace saying why should he beg from a king, instead he should beg from God directly. He ran towards his hut yelling, "The king himself is a beggar".
