ME, MYSELF AND MY SOCIETY

I live in a great society and I have absolutely no doubt about it. So great that it runs the risk of getting polluted just because an individual behaves like an individual (thinking and all) and not a sheep. There are certain unique skills, which are imparted to us by this great system; these skills are quite simply out of this world, out of our times and out of sync with everything.
The other day I had a heated argument with a friend on how our society is that of hypocrites. He agreed with all the examples I gave him of this genetic predisposition in Indians. He agreed when I talked of corruption, of extra marital affairs, of a preference for male-children, of respect for women (or the lack of it) and so on and so forth. You must be wondering then what was the high intensity argument about; well it was about the example he gave. He said he was quite sick of the way our society made it an absolute essential for a girl to be fair…true and so far so good, I agreed but then sample his next line; “me and my wife are quite fair but our daughter ?? I don’t know on whom she has gone and since her birth we are trying everything to make her gori but…..you know.
In perfecting our art of double standards we have completely forgotten that ultimately society is what we make it. If all of us decide to just fit in without any thought then we deserve what we have today. What is it that stops us from saying, no this not what I believe in and I shall not do so?? Why do we always tell our children to stand for the fair and the just and the truth and then go ahead and display the exact opposite through our behavior?? Why can’t we just dump all that is rotten ???Like a true Indian I have a very good and politically correct reason for it……….What will people say??? and if you are not buying that one then….... everybody in our society is doing this, what to do? Hamare yahan to Aise hi hota hai kya karen!!!!!
